SwitchIt! Maker 2

by Inclusive Technology

Turn your text, images, movies and sounds into switch-accessible stories, slide shows and simple onscreen activities

Image of SwitchIt! Maker 2Create cause-and-effect activities which are automatically accessible using a mouse, whiteboard, touch monitor, IntelliKeys, keyboard or switches.

Make talking books starring your students, or a slide show of a recent trip. Put that digital camera to good use!

Activities are easy to make and easy to play! Each activity has a sequence of onscreen pages which can have a picture, a video, some writing, music or recorded speech. You can use a simple switch, the computer’s spacebar, the mouse buttons or IntelliKeys to turn the pages.

SwitchIt! Maker 2 is especially designed so that children can make activities as part of a lesson. It’s that easy! The simple editor helps even young children and those with severe learning difficulties to make their own stories as part of a creative class activity. It’s ideal for making group activities using an interactive whiteboard too!

Customisable Options

SwitchIt! Maker 2 has a range of easy-to-use options that allow you to tailor the activities
to your student’s individual needs.

  • Sort activities
Select the activities you would like to be played and place them in the required order. This is useful for students to be able to work through a set of activities independently.
  • Sound and video options
Decide if you would like sound and video to be played automatically when a page is displayed, or in response to the user’s input. Also choose whether the user must wait for any sound or video to finish playing before they can move onto the next page. (This is very useful if the user has a habit of pressing the switch/mouse/spacebar indiscriminately.)
  • Delay
SwitchIt! Maker 2 has a useful ‘pre-acceptance delay’ function. This is ideal for students who make brief involuntary switch presses which you don’t want the program to recognise, for example as a result of tremor. If you set the delay to 0.5 seconds, the program will only accept switch presses that last longer than 0.5 seconds.
  • Page number display
Decide whether to have the page numbers of your activity displayed on the screen as it is being played.
  • Colour options
Set the colour of the text and background throughout your activities. This can be useful to create high contrast colour combinations, for students with visual impairment. It can also be useful to quickly and easily display an activity without the accompanying text, without deleting it all! Simply set the background and text to the same colour.
  • Slideshow mode
Use this option if you would like your activity to run as a slideshow or a presentation, for example, in the background at a parents’ evening.

TIP: Some schools are using SwitchIt! Maker 2 to create simple ‘I can …’ books for their children. The books start with a series of pages about the person, who they are, their likes and dislikes etc. This is followed by another series of pages, each linked to a particular skill area, for example, ‘In PE I can jump…’

The page is illustrated by either a photograph or a short video clip of the child jumping. Digital Movie Creator 2 is ideal for taking short video clips for use in SwitchIt! Maker 2. If the child is able, they may like to add a narration. Depending on the level of the child, they can be involved in deciding what their achievements are and what they would like on the page. Some children could make the pages themselves.

Activities created in SwitchIt! Maker 2 can be used with switches, touch monitors, trackballs, joysticks… any common access device, making them accessible to just about everyone. Some schools have also been inspired to create interactive records of achievement, which are sent home with the children at the end of term.
