SOLO Writing Coach is a writing intervention developed by Dr. Karen Erickson, Director of the Centre for Literacy and Disability Studies. The SOLO Writing Coach pairs Drs. Steve Graham and Karen Harris’s Self-Regulated Strategy Development research with SOLO technology.

SOLO Writing Coach has demonstrated dramatic writing gains – proven in real schools with real teachers and students. The graph below demonstrates students’ pre and post scores using SOLO Writing Coach. Average performing students made significant gains, 9.8%, while low performing students made exponential gains of 46.8% …truly closing the achievement gap!

SOLO Writing Coach includes:

• Three lesson books (one book per writing strategy)
  
• Explicit instruction to develop 3 key strategies for writing across all genres; summarisation, paragraph writing and writing based for a particular goal
  
• Each unit includes lesson plans for 18 instructional periods (totalling 54 instructional periods for all three)
  
• CD-ROM of SOLO writing assignments
  
• Implementation guide assists administrators with site and district-wide implementation as well as data collection
  
• Administrator walkthrough pad (50 pages)
