Wireless switch adapter overcomes the problem of connecting switches with cables
The Radio Switch Adaptor lets you make wireless switch connections to computers, communication aids, toys, environmental controls, and many other devices, up to four metres away.
- No tangling of wires in fingers or wheels
- Easier to mount on wheelchairs
- The user can be further away from the device
Two models of Radio Switch Adaptor are currently available to allow you to connect up to two switches wirelessly to the computer, via the USB or serial interface. A universal model of the Radio Switch Adaptor is available to connect directly to switch-accessible devices using two 3.5 mm plugs. This model uses an internal rechargeable battery. It is ideal for communicating aids, environmental controls, toys, etc. Please contact Spectronics for more information about the universal model availability.
Who would want to use the Radio Switch Adaptor?
Everyone who uses switches! The Radio Switch Adaptor removes the need for wires, so the switches can be operated from anywhere within four metres (12 feet), even through obstacles such as people and furniture. Unlike infrared switches, there is no need for direct line of sight.
Any standard switch can be used, and the Radio Switch Adaptor works with all PC switch software that use a standard switch interface, including Writing with Symbols 2000, Clicker 5 and any Sensory Software application such as The Grid 2 and Windbag.
Switch Driver software is included to allow switches to be used with programs that do not directly support switch access.
It is not possible to test every available hardware and software configuration, so if you have a setup we haven’t seen before, the Radio Switch Adaptor may be returned in a resaleable condition for a refund within 30 days.
What do I get with a Radio Switch Adaptor?
- Two transmitters for you to connect a switch into, each 38 × 38 × 12 mm (1.5 × 1.5 × 0.5”), which may be secured close to the switch-for example, under a table, in a cushion, or on a wheelchair. Velcro is ideal for this!
- One receiver which is connected to the computer. Size 132 × 64 × 16 mm (5-3/16 × 2-1/2 × 5/8”).
How do they work?
Each of the small transmitters has a 3.5 mm jack, allowing any standard switch to be connected. The transmitter is powered by a “button cell” battery, which should last for about one year and can be obtained locally.
The receiver is connected either to the RS232 serial or USB port of the computer. The receiver unit requires no battery or external power supply and draws power from the computer.
Switch activation is received via radio transmission between the transmitter and the receiver.
Each set of Radio Switch Adaptor has a unique code, (printed on the receiver), so you can have many people using Radio Switch Adaptors in the same room without interference. They are also resistant to interference from other radio emitters such as mobile phones and computers.
