Jigworks boxJigworks screenshotsJigworks is an amazingly flexible tool for creating and completing jigsaws, inset puzzles and much more! It offers a wide scope of both pre-reading and early reading activities, addressing skills from shape and picture matching up to early word-level reading skills.

Benefits

  • Create your own activities with any picture in seconds
You can make onscreen jigsaw activities in seconds using any picture – such as those from your digital camera. Simply choose a picture from your computer and choose how many pieces you want, from 4 to 64. You can even include sounds for when you start the jigsaw, when you complete it, and when you pick up and place a piece.

You can also cut out pieces of the picture with our easy-to-use activity editor – these can be any shape or size. For early shape-matching activities, you can cut out simple shapes from a plain background, or cut out objects from a digital photograph. For early reading and writing exercises, you can add letters or words as pieces! You can make onset and rime activities, or puzzles where students piece together the letters of their name – and all supported by sound!

Jigworks also comes with the Crick Picture Library, so you can compose your own pictures and cut out pieces automatically – and you can also use your own picture libraries.

  • Pre-reading and early reading activities for all abilities
Jigworks is not only suitable for early years, it is also ideal for older learners with special needs. You can move the pieces without having to hold the mouse button down.

Jigworks activities are incredibly versatile. Many examples are included, and it’s very easy to create your own with our easy-to-use activity editor. Jigworks is supported by Crick Software’s free website of resources at www.LearningGrids.com/anz (over 70,000 registered teachers). The LearningGrids.com website provides over 200 more activities and other ready-made materials for use in your classroom. Just register on the site, view images of the resources, then simply click to download.

You can create sets of related activities, so students can work independently through a whole set – or you can work as a group, using an interactive whiteboard or touchscreen monitor.

  • Sound support
Each piece can have its own sound, making Jigworks perfect for English language learners. See sample jigsaws

  • Fully switch accessible for students with special needs
Jigworks is switch accessible, for those who cannot use a mouse. Click here to read more about accessing Jigworks with switches.

Jigworks’ Jigsaws

There are two kinds of jigsaw – interlocking and inset. Ready-made jigsaws of both types are included, and it is very easy to create your own. View the Jigworks Guide to creating a new activity

Interlocking jigsaws can be made in seconds using any picture. Pictures can be taken from the picture library of 1800 pictures included with the program, from other picture libraries, or from your digital camera. Simply choose the picture and say how many pieces you want the jigsaw to have (anything from 4 to 64). You can optionally include sounds to be played when the jigsaw is started, when it is completed, and when pieces are picked up and placed.

With a inset jigsaw, you can choose which pieces of the picture you want to cut out, and these can be any shape. You can cut out simple shapes from a plain background for early shape matching, or you can cut out objects from a digital photograph. You can even place symbols on top of a picture and cut out the symbols.

The text tool enables you to add text and automatically cut out individual letters, whole words, or parts of words to make your pieces. You can attach different sounds to each individual piece of your jigsaw (either use the sounds included, or record your own), so you can create wonderful early reading activities. For example, you can make onset and rime jigsaws, or puzzles where you piece together the letters of a child’s name, all supported by sound.

Jigsaws can be put together into sets, so that a student can work through a sequence of related activities. Children can work independently through the whole set, or you can work in a group, or even with the whole class, using an interactive whiteboard.
