Wheelchair Control
The Genie Joystick is ideal for a person who can use a joystick but who finds the buttons on a standard wheelchair control too difficult to use. Just one button or a flick of the joystick is all that is required to switch modes from, for example, driving the wheelchair to adjusting the seat position and back again. It is simple to use with no complex menus or displays.
On the top panel of the joystick are two buttons and the joystick element itself. Button 1 is used to turn on the chair and select one of six operating modes: Driving, Speed Selection, Seat Function, Lights, Computer Mouse, and External Device. Depending on the needs and ability of the user some or all of these modes can be made available.
3.5mm jack sockets allow connection of external switches for those who find it difficult to operate the buttons on the unit itself. If the user is unable to use switches at all a special “joystick flick” mode is available whereby a flick of the joystick takes the place of a switch.
The Genie Joystick can be fitted to any wheelchair that is fitted with a DX™ power module. If you already have a wheelchair the Genie joystick simply replaces the existing joystick. No other equipment is required.
Computer Access
The Genie Joystick has a wireless computer mouse built-in. This comprises of an InfraRed transmitter within the joystick and a mouse emulator that plugs into the USB port of your computer. When the wheelchair is positioned close to the emulator an invisible link is made between the Genie Joystick and your computer. When computer access mode is selected the Genie joystick is used to move the mouse pointer on the screen.
Mouse movements are fully proportional and give smooth accurate control of the Windows mouse pointer. The joystick is used to move the mouse pointer on the screen, pressing button 1 activates the left click, whilst pressing button 2 activates the right click.
Type-Matic Onscreen Keyboard
Type-Matic is an onscreen Keyboard program included with the Genie Joystick. It enables you to input text into any Windows application.
A grid of cells represents the keys of a keyboard. When the mouse pointer is positioned over a cell and the left button is clicked the key the cell contains is sent to the active program.
Advanced word prediction features speed up the typing process. As you type Type-Matic predicts not only the word you are typing but also the next word!
The Type-Matic grid is completely configurable, can be customised to suit different users, and is supplied with a number of practical grids to get you started straight away.
Note: The version of Type-Matic supplied with the Genie Joystick does not support switch access.
Communication + Environmental Control
The Genie Joystick can be connected to an environmental control, communication device or any other device that can already be controlled by one or more switches.
The joystick movements simply replace the action of pressing switches. For example a device which requires one switch for ‘select’ and another for ‘scan’ can be interfaced so that a left deflection of the joystick is “select” and a right deflection of the joystick is ‘scan’.
Devices that present a grid of options to the user can be interfaced in such a way that forward/back and left/right deflections will highlight an individual cell in the grid whilst pressing Button 1 will select and activate the highlighted cell. Examples of such devices include the symbols on a communication aid or the buttons on a GEWA Control PROG environmental control transmitter.
Interface cables are available for popular environmental control and electronic communication devices.
Operate a Mobile Phone
The Genie joystick can be supplied with an internal Bluetooth module enabling wireless control over a SmartPhone running ClickToPhone software. When telephone mode is selected the Genie joystick can be used to browse the contents of your phone’s contact list, make and receive calls, and send text messages.
