First Categories uses 60 common nouns to train 6 essential early categories:
- animals
- food
- body parts
- clothing
- furniture
- and vehicles
The program expands understanding of word meaning and includes 120 illustrations and 120 photos. For students who are motivated by visual stimulation, the program features full-screen scenes and 3-D blocks. For those who are easily distracted, a simple black background can be used.
The program is suggested for individuals (Pre-K through Adult) with autism, developmental disabilities, language-learning disabilities, physical impairments, traumatic brain injuries (TBI), and aphasia.
Optimised Intervention Offers Improved Training!
Using Laureate Learning’s Optimised Intervention technology, First Categories begins with an assessment to determine which categories a student doesn’t already know. During training, a student is asked to identify the item that belongs to a particular category (“Which one is an animal?”) The program continually monitors a student’s performance and then tailors instructional delivery to his or her unique needs.

Flexibility and control
You decide to train using two or three choices and whether to use illustrations or photographs. Four examples of each item aid in generalising the concept.
At the end of each lesson, a summary of the student’s performance is presented, allowing you to quickly review progress and ensure accountability.
Includes 11 Activities!
