Innovative activities, hundreds of drawings and photographs, and exciting 3-D animation make this program fun and effective for learning categorisation skills

First Categories uses 60 common nouns to train 6 essential early categories:

  • animals
  • food
  • body parts
  • clothing
  • furniture
  • and vehicles

The program expands understanding of word meaning and includes 120 illustrations and 120 photos. For students who are motivated by visual stimulation, the program features full-screen scenes and 3-D blocks. For those who are easily distracted, a simple black background can be used.

The program is suggested for individuals (Pre-K through Adult) with autism, developmental disabilities, language-learning disabilities, physical impairments, traumatic brain injuries (TBI), and aphasia.

Optimised Intervention Offers Improved Training!

Using Laureate Learning’s Optimised Intervention technology, First Categories begins with an assessment to determine which categories a student doesn’t already know. During training, a student is asked to identify the item that belongs to a particular category (“Which one is an animal?”) The program continually monitors a student’s performance and then tailors instructional delivery to his or her unique needs.

Flexibility and control

You decide to train using two or three choices and whether to use illustrations or photographs. Four examples of each item aid in generalising the concept.

At the end of each lesson, a summary of the student’s performance is presented, allowing you to quickly review progress and ensure accountability.Images of activities used in First Categories

Includes 11 Activities!

  • Optimised Intervention
This activity automatically assesses a student’s knowledge of early categories and delivers highly individualized training. Based on a student’s responses, the program moves among three training levels, each with a different amount of instructional support.
  • Three Instructional Activities
    • Item Array (Inclusion) asks students to identify an array of items that belong to the same category.
    • Single Item (Inclusion) asks students to select one item that belongs to a particular category.
    • Single Item (Exclusion) asks the student to find the item that does not belong to a particular category.

  • Testing
This activity can be used to document pre- or post-training performance.
  • Six Supplemental Activities:
    • Build-a-Category introduces each item in a category until all 10 items are on the screen together.
    • Single Item Review presents one item on the screen and gives its name and category.
    • Robot Review presents an array of four items from a single category and names each one.
    • Find Four displays 10 items and asks students to find four that belong to the same category.
    • Magnet Match asks students to match an item at the top of the screen with one of the four items at the bottom.
    • Pick-a-Pair presents five pairs of items and asks students to find the pair from the same category.
