Guarantees reading success when other approaches have failed

Image of Sentence Master Levels 1-4 PackageImage of a Sentence Master screenshotDo you have students who are failing to learn to read? Students for whom a phonics approach has not worked? The Sentence Master ensures success for students who are at risk of reading failure due to difficulties in phonics and oral language. It is also effective with English language learners and students with impulsive learning styles. The four levels in The Sentence Master series increase reading comprehension, teach critical reading skills and foster independent reading.

What exactly is The Sentence Master?

The Sentence Master is a revolutionary remedial reading program developed by Dr. Marion Blank. It is designed for students who are struggling to learn to read or haven’t responded to a phonics-based approach. The primary goal of the program is to overtrain the often elusive non-content words (such as “is,” “but,” “and,” etc.) and word endings (such as “-s,” “-ed,” and, “ing”). These non-content words, commonly called “little” words or “functors” have long been known to be a major source of difficulty for poor readers.

Although there are only about 150 commonly used non-content words in the English language, these words make up almost half of the text of any page and are a major determiners of meaning. By truly teaching these words, The Sentence Master gives the learner control over half of any page he or she will ever encounter. Mastery of these words also significantly improves both decoding and comprehension.

The Sentence Master is designed to take students, even those who cannot read a single word, and systematically lead them to mastery of our written language system. Students use the program independently so they can receive individualised reading instruction in their own classrooms five days a week. You’ll not only see significant improvement in their reading ability and comprehension but the sense of accomplishment that accompanies success.

What makes The Sentence Master so effective?

  • First, students learn to read and write individual words
Students spend 15-30 minutes completing a series of computer and writing activities that teach one word a day. Many of the activities incorporate words already learned so that there is steady practice and review.
  • Students then read complete stories
After learning a set of 3 to 15 words, students see and read an animated story on the computer and then read the same story on paper.

You’ll see significant improvement in reading and also the sense of accomplishment and growth in self-esteem that comes with success.

Four Levels of Reading Instruction

The Sentence Master is divided into four levels. At each level, the sentence structures and stories become progressively more complex. Once your students have successfully completed Level 1, you’ll want to continue their progress with Levels 2, 3, and 4.

Each level of The Sentence Master contains:

  • 50-75 new words
  • 5 corresponding Word activities
  • 8 animated computer stories
  • 8 Story Booklets with writing and comprehension exercises

Choosing the Appropriate Level

If you’re working with a non-reader, start with Level 1 and continue through Levels 2, 3, and 4.

If your student has some reading ability, The Sentence Master Assessment Test will help you determine which level of The Sentence Master is the appropriate starting point.

“Children with difficulty learning to read can experience a great deal of success with The Sentence Master. The Sentence Master is designed so a child cannot fail.” – The Computing Teacher Vol. 18, No. 4

“Young children who used The Sentence Master had little difficulty working independently because of the program’s direct and consistent method. Because of its simplicity, the program will fit comfortably into a busy classroom.” – Electronic Learning
