Start-to-Finish Publishing Series Books
The Recognised Leader for Considerate Reading
Start-to-Finish is a collection of books and supportive audio, computer and print media for use in reading, language arts, social studies and science curriculum. Each series is based on validated educational research and uses precise language structure to develop higher order thinking skills and improve content comprehension.
Imagine what it would be like if every student had instructional materials to meet their needs throughout the entire day. Imagine the learning that would naturally take place, the inquiry it would inspire and the love of reading that would be evident. With the Start-to-Finish Publishing series, you no longer have to imagine the possibilities… you will experience it! Start-to-Finish Publishing will provide students with a considerate reading experience every time.
At Don Johnston Incorporated, writing and editing each sentence is considered to be an art. That’s why over 30 minutes are devoted to craft each sentence in the series, creating considerate text that every student can read and understand.
In addition, students are supported beyond the considerate text with considerate reading supports that aid in furthering comprehension. Teachers can use Start-to-Finish books for engaged, standards-based learning because of the wide variety of literature and content to choose from, data collection and innovative planning tools.
The Start-to-Finish Considerate Reading experience meets the needs of a diverse classroom with three series: Start-to-Finish Literacy Starters, Start-to-Finish Library and the newest addition of informational books, Start-to-Finish Core Content. Whatever series students engage in, they have the most independent reading experience ever.

- Start-to-Finish Literacy Starters – Launches Critical Reading Skills
Start-to-Finish Literacy Starters, developed in collaboration with literacy experts Karen Erickson, Caroline Musselwhite and Jerry Stemach, combine three carefully crafted text types to develop beginning reading skills. Story sets contain three books that fuse curriculum and life skills to help students connect to civics, history and science. Each book uses engaging story lines and vivid photographs to support and respect the older, non- and beginning-reader.
- Start-to-Finish Library – Strengthens Reading Fluency and Comprehension
With the Start-to-Finish Library (Gold Library: Grades 2-3 readability, Blue Library: Grades 4-5 readability), students immerse themselves in a narrative storyline that evokes imagery, activates and builds background knowledge plus, piques their interest in a specific topic or plot. Help students practise reading fluently and with comprehension using three media formats, with books from many topics, genres and literature, in any curriculum.
- Start-to-Finish Core Content – Builds Comprehension Skills for Content Mastery
Start-to-Finish Core Content books are standards-based informational texts that prompt students to question, make meaning and summarise as they read to learn. Core Content books offer full fluency and comprehension support, including embedded reading strategy scaffolds that build strong expository reading skills. Students who struggle with, or cannot make meaning of, their grade-level textbooks find independence with these supportive, age-appropriate texts – especially when they use the computer book.
