Start-to-Finish Core Content
Builds comprehension skills for content mastery

Do you have students struggling with their grade-level textbook content?
Allington* (2001) suggests that matching students with reading materials at their independent and instructional levels will optimise learning.
Start-to-Finish Core Content offers engaging, standards-based informational texts written at two levels and delivered in three media formats. Captivating expository texts prompt students to question, make meaning and summarise as they read to learn in content-area classes and intervention programs.
“It’s about time! Start-to-Finish Core Content is the information that my students want and need desperately. Up until this series, I have been using the Start-to-Finish Gold and Blue Library to try to provide factual curriculum to struggling students. How exciting it will be not to have to search for ways to find accessible text to help students develop their knowledge base.” Keri, Assistive Technology Specialist, Reno, NV, USA
Start-to-Finish Core Content books are designed for adolescent readers in the upper primary and high school grades who are not proficiently reading at grade level or lack the strategies necessary to successfully comprehend informational text. These resources are perfect for students who are learning English as a second language, at-risk, identified for special education or who need a selection of appropriate supplemental reading materials that allows them to acquire the content necessary to meet content area standards.
The text is carefully written and edited to match the interests, social maturity and reading skills of an older struggling reader. The content and graphics are mature, while taking into account the barriers that would normally make text hard to understand for a struggling reader – such barriers as weak decoding skills, weak background knowledge, limited vocabulary and idioms, and poor comprehension of complex syntax. Start-to-Finish text supports students whose reading skills are as second grade through fifth grade. Beyond the carefully-written text, each book is offered in multiple representations and designed to provide added layers of support. This unique combination of supports allows teachers and students to cultivate the right environment for successful independent reading in the content areas.
