The keyboard with the changing face

Student and teacher using an IntelliKeys to access a computerIntelliKeys is a programmable alternative keyboard that plugs into the keyboard or USB port of your Macintosh or Windows computer. It enables users with physical, visual or cognitive disabilities, who has difficulty using a standard keyboard, to easily type, enter numbers, navigate onscreen displays and execute menu commands.

In combination with its many overlays, it is the most flexible alternative keyboard available, providing individualised support for young students, struggling learners, and English as a Secondary Language (ESL/ELL) students.

Unlike the keyboard on your computer, the IntelliKeys has no keys! Teachers simply slide overlays over its programmable surface to create keyboards for different students and curriculum areas. The universal design of the overlays provides large, well-spaced keys in high contrast colours to help students locate letters, numbers, words, and directional arrows. Concepts are broken down into manageable components, with streamlined choices, fewer concepts at a time, pictures to support learning – even student photographs for personalisation.

You can also create custom overlays for activities made with IntelliTools Classroom Suite or IntelliTalk 3, IntelliMathics, IntelliPics Studio 3 using the Overlay Maker program.

Two models of IntelliKeys are available:

IntelliKeys USB is the ideal solution for you if you are using Windows 2000 or have been struggling with adapters. If you are purchasing a new IntelliKeys, make sure your computer meets the minimum system requirements for using IntelliKeys USB.

The many faces of IntelliKeys

IntelliKeys’ flexibility and versatility have led to applications far beyond classroom use. IntelliKeys is currently enabling first-time access for senior computer users, creating customized keyboards for individual adaptability in the work environment and providing access for individuals in rehabilitation, recovering from accidents or illness.

Seniors surfing the web – It’s Never 2 Late (Colorado, USA) and ClickSilver(California, USA), two organisations helping senior citizens learn to use computers, find IntelliKeys to be perfect for teaching first-timers how to use a computer and the internet. Seniors using IntelliKeys gain access to the Internet for information, shopping and most importantly, emailing family and friends.

In Rehabilitation – St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Institute (Washington, USA) Assistive Technology program provides patients computer access, environmental aids to daily living and augmentative and/or alternative communication, and uses IntelliKeys with its acute care and rehabilitation patients.

Vocational Applications – The Governor’s Office of Disability Affairs in Louisiana (USA) notes that IntelliKeys fits its goal for consumer accessibility to computers at its One Stop Centres. One Stop offer services such as Job Service, Unemployment Insurance and Disability programs and visitors can use computers to access online jobs and post resumes through their internet connection via IntelliKeys.
