Each of the books contains a series of creative and entertaining thematic units based on common children’s stories and books. The actual books referred to are not included with any of the Hands-on Reading books, but are common children’s books that may be found in libraries and bookstores. The activities and exercises for each literary selection include:
- a variety of fun cut and paste activities
- musical selections and songs for singing, signing and/or miming
- a series of entertaining worksheets utilising the Picture Communication Symbols (PCS)
- communication displays that can be used alone or with communication devices
Note: Since the first printing of the Hands-on Reading Series, some of the books on which the Hands-on Reading activities are based have gone out of print. Try looking for these books at used bookstores or online. The authors also recommend that if you cannot find the identical book referred to in the Hands-on Reading books, try to find a text with a similar story line.
