I just came across this low-tech communication book called Speakbook and thought it was really clever…It allows you to communicate with the assistance of a communication partner using only your eyes!
There is a short video demonstrating how Speakbook works. But basically, you write individualised phrases on each of the coloured strips on the page. Then the person with communication difficulties will look at the corner that the desired phrase is in, and then the colour of the dot that matches the colour of the strip that the desired phrase is in. The communication partner can then clarify the message of the user.
This type of strategy would be most suited to people with very limited motor control, such as people with motor neurone disease, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis and traumatic brain injury.
Speakbook was developed by Patrick Joyce, who has motor neuron disease, and he wanted as many people as possible to be able to benefit from Speakbook. Perhaps best of all, you can download and print speakbook for personal, educational and non-commercial use for FREE!
