Description: This Is the One I Want integrates the PCS into a series of entertaining but structured activities and exercises. It is appropriate for any special needs student who enjoys creating simple pictures. The use of the picture symbols also allows for the physically challenged student to participate by directing activities.

This Is The One I Want is divided into five chapters dealing with the topics of food, holidays and seasons, the environment, around the house, and out in the community. Each chapter consists of multiple lesson activities dealing with the chapter's theme.

Target Audience: preschool - elementary

Included within each unit:

  • Detailed instructions on how to complete the lesson.
  • Drawings to cut, colour, and paste together. (Picture symbols at the top of the page allow immediate discussion of the activity).
  • 1-3 pages of symbol activity sheets corresponding to each newly created picture.
  • A suggested list of questions on the activity topic that may be used to stimulate spontaneous conversation.
  • A communication board with symbols that correspond to the chapter lessons.

DynaVox Series 4 Applications:

  1. Much of the vocabulary needed for This Is the One I Want can be found in Gateway 40, 60, and Pro. To access Gateway on your DynaVox Series 4 device:
    1. Select the pull-down menu.
    2. Select Setup.
    3. Select Page Navigator.
    4. Select the directory in the left viewport.
    5. Select the Gateway All page in the right viewport.
    6. Select Go To Page.

This will bring you to the Gateway to Language and Learning Master page. From here, you can access all levels of the program. For more information on Gateway to Language and Learning, please see the DynaVox Language Applications section in your Quick Start Guide.

  2. Make sure that you review each unit to confirm that the words are programmed into the device prior to initiating the activity. You must know the location of needed vocabulary items in order to provide proper modelling and instruction. If items are missing from the system, you will find blank buttons that can be modified to add the necessary vocabulary items. When adding new vocabulary items to the system, make sure that you program the items in a manner that is logical and consistent with the page organisation strategies that are used.
  3. To allow students to independently generate and print their answers for the comprehension worksheets use the print function on your DynaVox Series 4 device. Find detailed printing instructions, go to www.dynavoxtech.com and click on 24/7 Support to find printer specifications.
  4. Add a writing activity to each unit by allowing the students to use their Series 4 device to generate writing samples. For emergent writers, use fill in the blank sentences and writing templates (see below) programmed onto the device for added support.

    Examples:

    Food Unit:
Write a grocery list of ingredients needed to make their favourite meal.

    Holidays Unit:

Writing template example:

My favourite holiday is __________. I like __________ because __________. My family and I like to ___________ and ___________ during __________.

Boardmaker Applications:

  1. Use the Boardmaker calendar templates to create schedules of events that will occur for each unit.
  2. Create games and song boards that correspond to each of the units to provide interactive ways to practice new skills.
