Boardmaker 5 Help Sheet - Importing Pictures into the Boardmaker Symbol Finder
by Jane Farrall, 5/ 2007
These instructions are for importing a picture into the Boardmaker Maker Symbol Finder, so that you can use it again and again in different boards. If you wish to import a picture just once onto a board please see the Help Sheet Importing pictures into a Boardmaker Board.
Copying the Picture into the Clipboard
- Go to the Start Menu, to All Programs, to Accessories and select Microsoft Paint.
- Go to the File menu, choose Open and select the picture that you want to use in Boardmaker.
- Select the dotted rectangle tool and select the area that you want to copy into Boardmaker.

- Go to the Edit Menu and choose Copy. This will copy the area within the rectangle into the Clipboard on your computer.
>>> The above instructions use Microsoft Paint as a program for putting the picture into the Clipboard. There may be other software installed on your computer that you are more familiar with that you would prefer to use e.g. software that came with your digital camera. If you don’t have any programs you are familiar with and Microsoft Paint is not installed on your computer, an easy to use free piece of graphics software is Irfanview, which can be downloaded from www.irfanview.com
Pasting the picture into the Boardmaker Symbol Finder
- Open Boardmaker. You may have an icon on your desktop for Boardmaker or you can go to the Start Menu, to All Programs, to Mayer Johnson, to Boardmaker.
- Open a Boardmaker board or create a new board.
- Click on the “Funny Man” or Symbol Finder icon on the toolbar to bring up the Symbol Finder.

- Press CTRL-V on your keyboard (hold down CTRL and press V at the same time).
- The import symbols window will open, with the picture you have just pasted in the top right hand corner.

- Click in the box below “Add a Name” and type in an appropriate name for the picture. In this example we will call it kangaroo. The name (or names) that you put in this box are what people will search for the picture under.

- Now click the Add a Name button to add this name.
- Now click on the Assign Categories button.
- In the window that opens select an appropriate category (or more than one) for the new picture. In this example we will select “Animals”

- Press OK.
- Press OK again.
- Now the symbol is permanently in the symbol finder and can be found at any time by typing the name you stored it under into the Symbol Finder.
